A mown labyrinth

A stone labyrinth

My first remembered encounter with a labyrinth was when visiting my daughter, she showed me a finger labyrinth plate that she had purchased from a potter. I googled "labyrinth" and found several sites that I visited. I became very interested and later announced to my family that what I really wanted for my 70th Sept.2,2000 bithday was a 7 channel turf labyrinth and a tree swing. It was a most happy birthday! I got just what I had asked for.

My husband, Leo, at first was somewhat negative about all this but, in a short time he began mowing the path as well as building a fire ring, outhouse, and small cabin by the labyrinth. He, who at first scoffed, is now "Keeper of the Labyrinth."

We celebrated the labyrinth's 3rd birthday Sept.2nd, 2003. It has become very special to me. In the beginning, I chose to walk it without any preset plan, concept, or ritual. I wanted to be as objective as was possible when I later evaluated my walking experiences.

Almost finished!

I have been walking it almost daily from the beginning. Each walk has been different, some more closely related than others, but still different. I now know that my labyrinth is more than just a circular path mowed in a field. It has enabled me, a skeptic, to directly experience feelings that people throughout history have been trying to describe. Most times when I walk I feel energy moving through me in a new but faintly familiar way. The word, "gratitude" has now become a part of my daily vocabulary. I am a happier person than I was B.L. My family agrees.

One of the main things that I like about the labyrinth concept, is the absence of dogma. Labyrinths provide us with a non-denominational spiritual path and offer all walkers the opportunity to experience feelings such as peace, gratitude, and love. My labyrinth experiences have only occurred on my turf one. I now have a much deeper appreciation of Nature than I had before. The most fun aspect is that I have a completely different relationship with weeds. I now see them as lovely, wild and energetic plant Beings.

Two of our grandsons have worked very hard for several months so that visitors to Terra could have the opportunity to walk a labyrinth. They chose to border the path with lovely rocks from the Boston Mountains of the Ozarks. It is a very special place. I am happy to see that since 2000 a great many more labyrinth sites can be found on the web. Medical centers, schools, parks, churches and individuals are creating them. Labyrinth consciousness is growing and I want to encourage it.
